| I'm making a desk containing frame and rail constrution with inset panels. I intend to dye the inset panels with some English Brown Oak analine dye before glueup. The reason I want to dye before glueup is so that expansion and contraction of the wood will always have color. Does the dye penetrate the wood sufficiently so that the wood will still react properly to yellow glue? Any and all replies will be appreciated. |

Nick:
I used several color dyes from Lockwood making blocks for my grandson's 2006 Christmas. I don't recall if Lockwood's dyes are "aniline," but they all mix with water. I didn't try gluing over the dye, but I wouldn't imagine it being a problem as the dyes penetrate well, leaving a lot of woodgrain visible. Why don't you try gluing up a sample joint from scrap, then beat on the joint and see if it holds. |
